The 1934 West Coast Longshoreman's Strike
The title of the larger unit, taken from the Zinn Education Project, is Prosperity, Depression and World War II: 1920 - 1944 (www.zinnedproject.com). Themes include Labor, Organizing and Social Class. These five lessons revolve around The 1934 West Coast Longshore Strike and focus on a key event in the labor unrest of the 1930s. According to the Zinn Project, the workers’ victory in the longshore strike of ‘34 was a powerful impetus in the revitalization of existing unions and towards organizing new ones. The union that eventually resulted, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), still exists and is said to be one of the more democratic in the United States.
